Magnesium is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body, influencing everything from energy production and nervous system regulation to muscle function and sleep quality. Different magnesium forms have different absorption rates, tissue affinities, and clinical applications. Ultimately, choosing the right one matters.
Why Magnesium Form Matters
Magnesium is always bound to another compound (e.g. citrate, glycinate). This “partner” influences:
- Bioavailability (how well it’s absorbed)
- Tolerability (e.g. digestive effects)
- Therapeutic use (e.g. sleep vs constipation)
- Magnesium Glycinate (or Bisglycinate)
Best for:
- Sleep support
- Anxiety and stress regulation
- Muscle tension
Why:
Bound to glycine, an inhibitory neurotransmitter that promotes calmness. As a result, this form is well absorbed and gentle on the gut.
Clinical insight:
Often my first-line recommendation for clients with poor sleep, heightened stress, or nervous system dysregulation.
- Magnesium Citrate
Best for:
- Constipation
- Occasional digestive sluggishness
Why:
Citrate draws water into the bowel, creating an osmotic effect that stimulates bowel movements.
Clinical insight:
Effective, but dose-sensitive. Too much can lead to loose stools, so it’s not ideal for long-term daily use in higher amounts.
- Magnesium Threonate
Best for:
- Cognitive function
- Brain health
- Memory and focus
Why:
Unlike other forms of magnesium, this form can cross the blood–brain barrier more effectively than others.
Clinical insight:
Useful in individuals experiencing brain fog, cognitive fatigue, or during periods of high mental demand.
- Magnesium Malate
Best for:
- Fatigue
- Muscle soreness
- Fibromyalgia-type symptoms
Why:
Because malate is involved in the Krebs cycle (energy production), this form supports mitochondrial function.
Clinical insight:
A good option for clients who feel physically depleted or experience chronic low energy.
- Magnesium Taurate
Best for:
- Cardiovascular health
- Blood pressure support
- Nervous system regulation
Why:
In addition, taurine supports heart function and helps regulate electrolyte balance.
Clinical insight:
Particularly relevant where stress and cardiovascular symptoms overlap.
- Magnesium Oxide
Best for:
- Short-term constipation relief
Why:
It has a high elemental magnesium content but absorption is poor.
Clinical insight:
Widely available and inexpensive, but not my preferred form for correcting deficiency due to low bioavailability.
- Magnesium Chloride (Topical)
Best for:
- Muscle cramps
- Localised tension
- Relaxation (topical use)
Why:
Can be applied as oils, sprays, or bath flakes. Absorption through the skin is still debated, but many report symptomatic relief.
Clinical insight:
Useful adjunct for clients who struggle with oral supplementation.
How to Choose the Right Magnesium
A simplified framework I often use:
- Sleep / anxiety: Glycinate
- Constipation: Citrate (short-term)
- Brain health: Threonate
- Energy / fatigue: Malate
- Heart health: Taurate
- Muscle tension (topical): Chloride
Final Thoughts
Magnesium is one of the most commonly depleted minerals, largely due to chronic stress, modern diets, and soil depletion. But more isn’t always better; the right form, dose, and timing are what make it effective.
Before supplementing, it’s worth considering your symptoms, diet, and overall health picture. Magnesium can be powerful when used correctly but like all nutritional interventions, it works best when personalised.
